Our Story

Rolled the Dice on 6/23/23

Our dear mutual friend Carrie Ann introduced us in 2020 because she knew we were a lot alike and enjoyed the same things in life. After a few years of communicating via social media due to geographical logistics, we finally were able to go on our first date in June 23, 2023. The night was filled with lots of laughs and we both felt an instant connection.

You had me at “doorknob”

On our second date the following night, Tom brought over sushi and we talked for a long time getting to know one another even better as we hung out on my side porch on a beautiful summer evening. As Tom was helping me clean up, he noticed that my side door didn’t lock. He was insistent on fixing it that night so we made a trip to Walmart at 8:30 pm to get a new door knob. Since it was the original door to the house built in the 1950s, the doorknob was too big so Tom had to carve a bigger hole with a steak knife because I did not have the adequate tool for the job. However, as I watched him work, I knew I had something even more adequate…the man doing the job! And the timing was just right to seek a 3rd meet up!

During our friendship, Tom graciously invited me to Frye Island as he loves sharing his seasonal home with family and friends. On July 1st of 2023, I finally took him up on his offer to spend some fun time with him and his two daughters, Samantha (18) and Cierra (almost 14). Tom made my first island trip memorable with beautiful boat outings, green machine tours, and an annual pig roast with axe throwing hilariousness! I didn’t want to leave but I already had 4th of July plans to spend time with friends, Krista and Eric, who have a Maine vacation home 2-hours away. Krista told me during the visit that she could tell I really liked Tom and said, “Sugar, we could be Maine neighbors next summer!” My kindred spirit was right!

You've never been to Nashville?!?!

Our first time-away together was over Veterans Day weekend in 2023. Everyone knows that when you travel with someone you understand even more about that person. Tom was shocked at the amount of clothes, especially the shoes, that I packed for the trip and handled the suitcases, bags and me with utmost patience as he chuckled mumbling it’s only 4 days.
One of the things Tom loves to do is tour others around places he has been and watch them enjoy all the things that make him happy as well. Tom made sure that my first-time Nashville experience was…as my mom would say, “one for the books!” The trip provided us with a fun escape full of laughter, music, celebrity sightings and non-sightings and a deeper connection. I learned that he supports my goofiness whether it be line-dancing for the first time, dancing on a bar at Coyote Ugly, Karaoke singing at Jason Aldeans, and convincing him to do an Uber karaoke duet in the wee hours of the morning, and he learned that eating White Castle hamburgers at 1:30 am is the reason why they are called belly bombers when you wake up the next day! (My fault for saying You’ve never had a White Castle hamburger?!?!)

Tom always had a vision of retiring in the Caribbean and at the end of 2019 after Frye Island “shut down”, he went to St. Thomas for the off season. During the time Tom was enjoying the other kind of island life, he met a neighbor, Sharie, across from the air bnb he was staying at and they became became friends. Sharie invited Tom to stay in an apartment at her house on his return the following year to care for her dogs and housesit while she ventured back to her Catalina, CA home. And in 2020 and the “snowbird”years following, Tom and Sharie became more than landlord-tenant, they became family. Tom adores Sharie just as much as she adores him!
In fall of 2023, Tom and I lived together for 1 1/2 months before he headed to St. Thomas. During that time, we realized how naturally pleasant it was to spend every day together solidifying what we already knew; “we were meant to be together”! Our initial plan was for me to fly down to St. Thomas on Christmas Day for 10 days but due to my dad’s passing the trip was delayed until after his funeral. While some friends and colleagues told me not to return, unbeknownst to me, Tom already planned for me to stay with him with his proposal of marriage on NYE which was 12/31/23 (123123) in St. John. During the course of our 4-month stay, we purchased property and plan to start building our island dream home at the end of this year.

Starting Over 🎶

Tom often sends me country songs due to lyrics and this Chris Stapleton song expressed what we both felt “it don’t matter to me wherever we are is where I want to be…” which is us in a nutshell! So it was an incredible blessing that my seventh move in less than five years was for the final time! It was a special, private beginning for us since the island was not “open”. Tom retrieved me on an old, dingy boat. We were there with only a handful of people and enjoyed the island’s tranquility for a couple weeks. During that time, Tom diligently worked, as always, getting projects up to date for Frye’s opening while Chase and I explored every inch of its beauty on our 5-7 mile daily walks. I also enjoyed sprucing up the house to become a combined home with both our furnishings. Tom even taught me some of his carpentry skills.
